As our community and economy continue to expand, the reliability of our wastewater systems becomes more critical than ever. The increasing volume of wastewater poses significant challenges to our public health, our stakeholders, and our environment. To tackle these issues head-on, AWSS N.V. is committed to moving towards integrated sustainable wastewater management and the enhancement of its facilities by modernizing and digitizing wastewater infrastructure. Here is how:
Short-Term Solution: Transformation of the Bubali Wastewater Treatment Plant
In the short term, AWSS N.V. will focus on revamping the Bubali Wastewater Treatment Plant. This comprehensive upgrade involves:
- Upgrading the Current Aeration System: Modern and efficient aeration systems will be installed to enhance the treatment process.
- Accelerating Purification with Granular Sludge: New systems will be introduced to accelerate the transformation of conventional activated sludge into granular sludge, significantly improving the efficiency and effectiveness of wastewater treatment.
Benefits of the Modernization Efforts
These upgrades will bring numerous benefits, including:
- Eliminating Odors: By ensuring the optimal performance of the physical-chemical and biological processes for the oxidation and removal of the organic substances present in the wastewater, bad odors will be prevented from being released into the air.
- Ecological Balance of the Lagoon: Well-treated water will be provided to the lagoon, contributing to a better ecological balance for all animal and plant species and eliminating any health risks for people who may come into contact with the lagoon water.
Key Measures for Improvement
To achieve these benefits, we will implement several key measures:
High-Efficiency Aeration
Effective Mixing System
Granular Sludge Technology
AWSS N.V. is also embarking on a digital transformation of the entire sewage system to optimize operations and prepare for future demands:
- SCADA and Data Management System: A new SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and Data Management System will be implemented, connecting all equipment in the plant. This system will support real-time monitoring and automatic actuation as needed.
- Real-Time Monitoring and Control: The platform will collect data from various sensors and probes, enabling constant monitoring and control of the purification process. This ensures the health status of the plant is always up-to-date.
- Holistic Vision of the Network: Extending this digital platform to the entire sewage system will provide a comprehensive view, optimizing operations and supporting the expansion of the sewage infrastructure to meet growing demands from new developments on the island.
